Introduction
This page is the starting point for all areas of the site that have to do with the specific divisions of baseball within CAYB. Each division is summarized below with the appropriate age bracket, goals, and a brief explanation of the style of play within that division. In all divisions, age is based on the player's age on April 30th of the league year.
Each of these sections has a link to the corresponding schedules, results and standings for that division. Note that this will open up a new browser window and all areas will load within that window in printer-friendly format. We hope you enjoy this feature of our site.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All divisions play competitive ball! While there is indeed guaranteed playing time for all players during the regular season, playing time is not equal. In other words, this is not a purely developmental or recreational league. Within the context of the rules, the coach's primary job is to try and win games with the players he thinks will get the job done at the positions he feels they are best suited for achieving that goal. All divisions have championships at the end of the season for the teams with the best records, and all-star players are selected for post-season tournament play.
Shetland Division (ages 5 and 6) [ Schedule-Results-Standings ]
The Shetland division is our T-Ball league for ages 5 and 6. Our goal is to introduce young players to the great game of baseball in an environment that is safe, fun and family-friendly. Training emphasis for the Shetland Division is placed on learning the rules of the games, and basic fielding and hitting techniques. Bases are set at 50 feet.
Pinto Division (ages 7 and 8) [ Schedule-Results-Standings ]
Players in the Pinto Division are introduced to live pitching (delivered by coaches). Training is focused on advanced hitting and fielding. Older players within this group are introduced to the pitching game in preparation for moving up to the Mustang division. Bases remain at 50 feet. Pitching rubber is set at 38 feet.
Mustang Division (ages 9 and 10) [ Schedule-Results-Standings ]
The Mustang division begins the players' training in complete baseball, including lead-offs, stealing, player pitching, pick-offs and more. Players receive further instruction in the pitching game and advaned training in base-running becomes necessary at this level. Base distance moves up to 60 feet. Pitching rubber is set at 44 feet.
Bronco Division (ages 11 and 12) [ Schedule-Results-Standings ]
The Bronco division takes 11 and 12 year old players into the realm of total baseball, with no restrictions on base stealing and tournament play that is complete through World Series. Base distance moves to 70 feet. Pitching rubber is set back to 48 feet. Older and stronger players are introduced to new pitching techniques and often learn their first curveball during this age bracket.
Pony Division (ages 13 and 14) [ Schedule-Results-Standings ]
The Pony division is currently our oldest division at CAYB. The base distance moves to 80 feet and the pitching rubber moves back to 54 feet. Advanced pitching is the norm with fastballs pushing as high as 70 mph and breaking pitches that force hitters to adjust to the same level of play that they will see in high school and beyond.
